Separate, but "Unequal"

GREENVILLE — A rally is planned for 10 a.m. Thursday in the rotunda of the state Capitol to protest two controversial bills calling for the merger of Mississippi Valley State University and Alcorn State from merging with Jackson State.
At a town meeting Sunday at the Elks Lodge, 1818 East Alexander St., State Senators David Jordan and Willie Simmons and state Rep. John Hines and Historically Black Colleges and Universities alliance chairman Othor Cain called for the rally.

“It’s time that we show up and show support for our historically black schools,” said Cain. “If we don’t, then we have no one to blame but ourselves. We can’t sit back and not do anything to prevent this from happening.”Recently, Jackson State University President Dr. Ronald Mason, Jr. has voiced approval of the merger. He reportedly cited Hines as one of his backers but the District 50 representative said that is not true.

“I don’t know where he came up with that, but I want to make this perfectly clear so that everyone will understand,” said Hines. “In no way do I support this merger. I have met with Dr. Mason, and we have talked, but never have I voiced being in agreement with him on this.”

Jordan and Simmons talked about past struggles and victories during the Civil Rights Era. They feel the time for protesting has returned.

“I’m willing to do whatever it takes,” said the fiery Jordan, who received a standing ovation during his address before the packed audience. “We’ve been through this before. We know what to do.”

Simmons says the problem is not the schools but inadequate government funding. “They would never think about merging Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Southern Miss so why should they consider merging Jackson State, Alcorn and Valley? Those three schools have a tradition and a need.

“The problem has been that Jackson State, Alcorn and Valley haven’t received the funding that the other three have. That needs to change.”

Maybe the problem is that these schools are "degree factories" which are cranking out illiterate graduates by the hundreds? I have a problem with "black", "white", or "women's" colleges in the 21st century!

I personally know several people who teach at the Valley and JSU . They all state that these "black" schools have very low standards and expectations. Basically, they sell "degrees" to improve the socio-economic status of their students. The English language is optional to most graduates, who expect a "degree" after completing (paying for) so many hours.

These schools do a disservice to their students.... a "degreed" idiot is still an idiot in our competitive work world. Skills and performance will get you a job these days... not a worthless diploma that only proves that your checks cleared!

The lobbyist lives in Greenville and travels to Washington, D.C. on behalf of four or five Mississippi cities that he "represents" and lobbys for. That's what I call a gravytrain job. Gets paid big bucks for nothing.

8:56..I believe you are right. Sister City = Ambassador

SHE and DADDY never cease their pastime hobby of "plotting", "planning" and "scheming"!

THEY are both "users"!

And liars!

Anonymous said...

9:01 Amen! I can't think as far as today much less plotting, planning and scheming. They need to we writers for tv shows like CSI or daily soaps.

Anonymous said...

And does THE lobbyist get paid by EACH of the four or five cities that HE represents.

Hmmmmm.

And THE "other" cities are....?

Anonymous said...

Yes, he gets paid based on the population of each city. I don't know how much for the other cities, but it was $30,000 plus ALL expenses (airline tickets, hotels, food, etc.) for Greenville.

And the DDT has never bothered to write an article concerning HIM and WHAT he has been lobbying for!

But, every time SHE goes to Washington, D.C. it is on the front page of the newspaper.

If I had not read this blog site, then I would never have known that HE existed nor what HIS "supposedly" job duties were.

2:52 am...There is a lot more that the public doesn't know about. The Diva's tactics are shrewd and never ending. Everything is kept a secret. She needs to be exiled to Africa. Yes, put her butt on another continent and get her out of here.

The DDT owes the public citizens of Greenville, MS. a complete investigation concerning not only THE mayor, but ALL of our elected officials and city employees.

Enough is enough!

SHE should not be allowed to "use" the city and to continue to "hide" behind DADDY'S back, her personal "city paid" body guards' backs, the whole dog gone police department's backs and all city employees' backs!

And any other person's back that SHE chooses to bulley or intimidate to get her way and to have complete control.

Where is the democracy?

I guess Forthright is AWOL

She did and she was not a happy DIVA, especially when the council said she could be the best lobbyist for Greenville, with all her connections to DC (yeah right!)...she remarked to that "I am not a Lobbyist!"...haha... all her bragging and BS just backfired! YES!

Anonymous said...

Sure, SHE could be the best lobbyist for Greenville...because she gets an e-mail from O'Bama every day...or so SHE says! LOL!

Now, the question is...which Greenville will SHE be lobbying for...Greenville, MS. or Greenville, Liberia!

SHE needs to make up her mind.

One or the other....can't have both!

Oh...and she tells everyone that Oprah has her cell number programmed in her phone! LOL....I think she is a wanna be living in a fantasy world.

Well, Oprah is retiring...maybe, just maybe, THE mayor will retire, also---perferably in Florida! LOL

(Or...Greenville, Liberia!)

I've come to the conclusion that Ed Nichols is "Forthright" as the relative abandonment of this blog has coincided with his departure (and subsequent job search he must be engaged in) from the DDT.

It may also explain the posting of DDT articles as topics.

Good point, but I disagree.

The publisher of a newspaper's (any newspaper-not just the DDT)main goal is to sell newspapers.

And to sell more newspapers...the publisher would encourage disagreements and debates "within" the contents of the newspaper...and NOT use a separate,
"free" blog site to do such!

ALL articles, letters and editor's columns are written very conservatively...with very little debateable details...just a "few" possible facts, which are seldom
questioned.

Forthright is probably a nice, non-opinionated, silent type of guy (or gal!) with just a tad bit of rebellion or devilment added to keep him interesting and surprising.

If the media is NOT "stirring up" the drama, then, they are missing sells.

I just got back from attending a wedding in Clarksville tn. I was there for 3 days and it was such a joy to be able to see what a town that size had to offer. It is just a little bigger than G'ville and was so clean and everything was so well kept. There were no buildings with broken windows and weird paint colors. All the conveinent stores were so clean and restaurants were filled with very nice waiters and the people were all smiling everywhere we went. By living here in G'ville we forget what it is like to be proud of your community and everyone being tickeled to death just to be living in such a great town. I have been back just 24 hours and already I am sinking back into the depressed mood and lost cause I see all around me here in G'ville. I don't know how much longer my family can hang on here with the steady decline of G'ville. High taxes, private schools,no opportunties, run down streets and buildings and just plain dirty looking everywhere here in G'ville. None of this existed in Clarksville ,Tn. I wish I could go back there and bring what I saw home to G'ville. I never realized how bad it was here until I went somewhere and saw it for myself. I was one of those that had there head stuck in the sand and just wouldn't admit how it really is here in my town. Gosh it is so depressing!

9:29 I also have been out of town recently and had the same experience.I was one that couldn't see the forest for the trees. What a eye opener it was for me and my family to see that there is great places to be other than here in G'ville. I don't know how G'ville got this way but it definately is way, way behind other towns our size. I think it's just the delta that is this bad and we are all so used to seeing it that we don't realize how bad it is really. By being away for several days and coming back to G'ville sure opened my and my husbands eyes and have a plan to be leaving G'ville as soon as possible. It will be hard to leave but someone in our family has to break the chain of just existing in a place with no opportunities and a town that will never change for the better as far as we can see.

As far as the sister city my concern is not the mayor because we all realize what she is all about ; my concern is Carl McGee and Kenny Gines who want to be the next Mayor of Greenville. I kind of expected it from Gines because he ia a known puppet but i am very disappointed in Carl. Now i have to rethink some things. Sad Sad !

Hey there would you mind stating which blog platform you're working with? I'm
going to start my own blog soon but I'm having a difficult time making a decision between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your design and style seems different then most blogs and I'm looking for something completely
unique. P.S My apologies for getting off-topic but
I had to ask!
