You can't blame the whites for leaving Greenville or the public schools. blame teenage pregnancy, one parent families, crime, gangs, welfare, parents who don't care, etc. i feel safe at ws. i don't feel safe at greenville public schools. Some of the parents are as scary as the students. i know that will be taken as racist, but it's how i feel. i want to go somewhere where i have the same lifestyle and values as the other parents. My family doesn't live off government handouts. I believe in working for what you get. I don't want to be around people who have an "entitlement" mentality.

I have watched classmates who come back for a reunion and have not been in Gville for 20 yrs or so just cry when they see the city now. In fact there are several upcoming reunions that are thinking about having theirs outside of Greenville because of the present condition of the city. They want to remember Greenville as it was when we had leadership in Greenville.
Whether you are black or white just ride around and look at your city and see if you are satisfied. Tell me your elected officials are making a difference. Ride down some side streets like S. California and tell me you like the way it looks or McCorkle Circle. Try 82 Hwy or Main St.
Just tell me at what point Gville was in this condition under white leadership. It is natural to defend your race but you sure as the devil do not have to vote for them if you want a better Gville for both black and white.

Quality education is the key to a growing and prosperous economy. If you are lucky enough to receive a good education in the Delta, the first thing you do is "get out" (as the author above noted). Who can blame them? Today's Delta is the heart of poverty, ignorance and apathy. The local government is corrupt and their crimes go unpunished.
Local politicians stand in front of a TV camera and slaughter the English language. Some are barely literate. What message does that send to our children about the value of education? The only thing our "leaders" know how to do well is hold onto their jobs (which goes back to the "silent game").
I once had a black teacher tell me that "whites" could not teach "black" children. When I asked her to clarify, she stated, "Y'all don't know where we been; we have a different culture." Admittedly, this was several years ago, but it brings to light a very good question: If you perceive yourself as "different", then logically you expect different treatment... which is the basis for prejudice. What happened to cultural diversity... or is that a one way street?
It is sad to think that former students would consider moving their class reunion rather than have to face the reality of Greenville. Perhaps memories are the only things Greenville has left to offer.

the authorities in greenville should be held responsible for the current state in our city. crime is the reason no industry, business, and/or individuals want to move here. the crime rate is directly proportional to the amount of corruption in the force. look at the local officers and thank them for the wonderful reality of our city. thank them for getting those bulging muscles by both legal and illegal ways to protect our community. thank them for sitting at home during their shift waiting for a call instead of patrolling our streets. thank them for overlooking certain dealers although they inhabit the house next to where we raise our children. when no crime is punished and those who are hired to protect us are involved, how do we expect our city to flourish in any way. it has become a joke and the downward spiral has no choice but continue its path.
hummm lot of accusations there, can you back that up? Funny this is, I bet you will call them when you need help!
I thank God for the private schools, particularly Washington School. If it were not here, few non-Catholic taxpayers would remain in Greenville. And absolutely NO ONE would consider moving here without a reasonable hope of educating their children.
Greenville was doomed by the private schools? I hardly think so. If anything, the competition should have made the public schools stronger, not weaker.
First, a lot of black people in Greenville send their children to parochial and private schools. Prior to integration, a lot of black parents sent their children to Sacred Heart. White folks are not the only people who want their children to get a quality educatio. Second, the current leadership did not start the problems. The mayor has only been in office for about seven years. The problems in Greenville began in the mid to late 80's. If Greenville was in such good shape prior to Hudson's election, how could she run it in the ground in only seven years? The mayor did not create this mess. We need to face the fact that we have allowed some inappropriate people, black and white, to be elected into positions over the last twenty years when they are poorly educated and have a provincial and limited mentality. Having a degree does not necessarily mean that you are educated. We have people getting appointed and elected to positions on the city and county level then running to one of our local colleges getting degrees but not getting the benefits of a strong liberal arts education. When a person brags about having a degree and breaks verbs on a continuous basis, there is a problem. The opportunists/street people/ ghetto folks get the better positions, and they try to prevent better qualified people, black and white, from getting positions. Its as harder or harder for a well-educated black person from a two-person professional family who is a native of Greenville to get ahead in Greenville as it is for those of you who complain about discrimination against you because you are white. Live my nightmare for one day, and you'll be trying to leave just as I am trying to leave.
I agree the people in office did not create the problems, But I do believe they are making it worse and not better. I agree with the past post about the government being at fault providing an easy way out to live.
They pay you to not work if you work they stop the money. Will not allow the father to live in the house with there children (that might be a good thing). Food stamps for food. They pay your house rent, I wouldn't buy a house either if someone was footing my housing bill. Stop all this EASY LIFE and you will see some folks out looking for a job and living a little different.
Humm maybe these folks are smarter them we think!! Naaa I enjoy being able to buy my own house the choice of car I like, and have money for vacation! I think there caught in a trap and only they will be able to to get there selves out. I as a tax payer wish they would do better for them selves and the delta would do better.
First, I am a black male, and I concur with the Arthur of this article, however I also believe that we must stop blaming each other while the problem that be continue to persist, even escalate.
Second, we must come together as a people of all nationalities and root out crime and destruction where ever it persists.
Finally, a divided house cannot prevail.
SCHOOLS!!! They belong to you. You own them, not black, and white people, but all who are citizens and pay taxes here. If your home needed repair you would fix it, if your car needed repair you would. The Schools are yours stop passing the buck come together and fix them like they wonce was.
Maybe the leaders are less at fault than their constituents. Look at the gross misspellings in the above posts: "Arthur" (with an upper-case A, no less) instead of "author;" "wonce" rather than "once;" "there" instead of "their." It goes on and on in virtually every post on this blog. Our local population largely consists of functional illiterates. The ignorance displayed in these posts is frightening, and they are an indication of a much larger problem that has very little to do with race.

That is your greenville public schools at its best!!
But I can bet I make more money then you!
The word is 'than' not then!LOL.
Here we go on the spelling trip again!!! WHO CARES!! NOT ME!
It was just a joke referring to the prior posts....CHILL!LOL
Who cares? YOU should. The decline of written and oral language is the beginning of the downfall of all of us. I, for one, hope to remain living in a civilized world where the residents know how to conjugate a verb and know the proper use of their/they're/there. And then or than. If we can't speak properly, then we might as well revert to speaking in grunts and clubbing our food when we're hungry.
That,s a joke! I do not care. I can communicate! My profession does not require a lot of writing. So its not important to me! Everyone does not live your life where you worry about the small stuff!!
dear abby,
i need help. is it normal for a husband to call his wife a worthless m.f. and a stupid -itch? i think this is verbal abuse. he called me this in front of my son and daughter. i need advice please. this has been going on for 11 years. i don't want my son to think that this is the way you treat women.
I agree that you are being verbally abused and that you need help. Your husband also needs help. It's possible that he grew up hearing his father treat his mother this way...so the cycle goes!
Please talk with someone--a friend you trust, an older person, your pastor or a professional counselor.
While I do not know your name, I am praying this moment that God will guide you to find help.
thank you 7:05 writer. I have been to counselors before and basically what they tell me I already know. Knowing what to do and doing it however are 2 different things. I don't know if his father was this way to his mom. He does talk to his mom almost as bad as he talks to me. I should be praying and going to church because i know that would help. I appreciate your prayers, thank you.
To 9:30 am:
Nothing about this is normal. You and your kids need to get out of this environment. You CAN do better, but by staying in an abusive situation, you are enabling his abuse. Kick him to the curb and get on with your life. Both you and the kids will be better off away from this SOB! If he is any kind of a man, he will change and come back to you. If not, GOOD RIDDANCE!!!
HAPPY M L K DAY!!
Happy M.L.K. Week for the students of Leland Public Schools. Yes, they take 5 days off for this celebration.
I wish the federal gov did that!! It would be nice to have a week off work, with pay!!
