Dear Scoop Readers and Contributors, Sorry about the long absence, but I have finally gotten settled in my new home... in Savannah, GA. It has been quite an ordeal... finally selling my family home, and most of my possessions to seek "greener" pastures in my latter years.
Greenville will always be my home, but it has changed... and unfortunately not for the better. I am near retirement and will be doing consultant work in a local hospital. Savannah is breathtaking and reminds me in some ways of the quaint "old" Greenville that I knew as a child.
I leave behind many good friends, co-workers and no doubt many enemies who have disagreed with my "opinions" over the last 7 years. The important thing to remember is that they were "opinions"... things that we all have, but rarely get to share in a public forum. The "Delta Scoop" has truly been an enjoyable outlet and forum for me to host... but it is time for me to step down as blog master. I wish nothing but the best for Greenville and its residents. I hope someone will continue this forum, perhaps under a new name with "new" ideas to stimulate conversations.
I can honestly tell you that hosting a blog is not difficult with today's technology and Google. I have genuinely enjoyed hosting the "Scoop" and believe that WE have contributed to the betterment of Greenville... through our opinions, criticisms and recommendations, needed changes came about. Our voices were heard!
I have always been loyal to the complete anonymity of myself and all contributors. It is not important who said what. It is important to simply let your voice be heard! I will not take down the "Delta Scoop" for those who enjoy the comments section. Hopefully, someone will come up with a new blog, but until then, you can continue to post your comments here on the Scoop. I wish you all peace and prosperity in the future. I will never forget my home town.
I am not good at good-byes, so I leave you with this quotation from former President Carter at his farewell address to the nation:

You can get hot tamales, catfish, many sno cones, hub caps, some bags and thangs , bbq, smoked sausage, etc. They come in various mexican colors, some even have a rock walkway with a small a/c hung out of a not so square hole.

The nicest addition to Greenville which is the new McDonalds now has Hawaian Shaved Ice right across the road in a Fred Shed and you also go a few yards and get those fine cut ribeyes for 15 dollars.
With all of this going on would i ever think about voting for a existing council member for Mayor ?

Right! This is our only chance to be heard. There must be someone retired who has the time. I hate to lose the Scoop. I have learned more truth from this site than in 20 years of reading the DDT. I wish Forthright the best in his retirement and for getting out of Greenville. I wish I could leave but I can not leave my grandchildren.

I also have learned a lot from here since I moved to Greenville. I would like to have a positive site where people could not only post their ideas, but actually get action from them. Sometimes it takes just one family member to move to get the ball rolling. In my case I think I will show the rest of my family the way to move and they will soon follow. Even if it takes every nickel I have somehow I will get my grankids away from here so they can have ample opportunities to grow somewhere else. See you on the other side of prosperity....

G'ville needs to have just a panel not a mayor to run this small of a community. ELECT MAYBE 7 PEOPLE TO SIT ON A BOARD TO WORK FOR THE CITIZENS. That way when an issue is put to a vote no one is able to stack the deck in favor of anyone. If a council member gets out of line the citizens can vote them out at replace them at anytime. It is working all over the country by doing this and the council members know if they don't do the right thing they can be removed at anytime. Kinda like being fired at your job by not doing your job. Hey it keeps them in line just like being fired from your job keeps you in line.

She pointed to this round metal tag on her blouse and ask if I knew this man. Yes ma'am I do. Would you vote for him? No ma'am, never. She said thank you and got in her car. I felt bad about my abrupt answer, but not about the way I feel. As she was getting in her car, I told her that I apologize if I came off real negative, but I know who the person is (hopefully not her son). He has 8 years on the council and has not made a difference. Please ma'am vote all elected officials out of office.

He is one of the most influential Americans (not blacks) in history period. It doesn't have anything to do with rap music, bling bling or crime. ReplyDeleteThe overall poverty rate climbed to 15.1 percent, from 14.3 percent the previous year, and the rate from 2007-2010 rose faster than for any similar period since the early 1980s when a crippling energy crisis amid government cutbacks contributed to inflation, spiraling interest rates and unemployment. For last year, the official poverty level was an annual income of $22,314 for a family of four.
Measured by total numbers, the 46 million now living in poverty are the most on record dating back to when the census began to track in 1959. The 15.1 percent tied the level of 1993 and was the highest since 1983.
Broken down by state, Mississippi had the highest share of poor people, at 22.7 percent, according to calculations by the Census Bureau. It was followed by Louisiana, the District of Columbia, Georgia, New Mexico and Arizona. On the other end of the scale, New Hampshire had the lowest share, at 6.6 percent.
The share of Americans without health coverage rose from 16.1 percent to 16.3 percent — or 49.9 million people — according to Census Bureau revisions. The increase was due mostly to continued losses of employer-provided health insurance in the weakened economy.

If we are expected to pay for other people's mistakes we should at least attempt to make them learn from their bad choices. The current system rewards them for continuing to make bad choices.

It should be considered of utmost importance that anyone considering visiting Greenville realize that the town is notorious for its bad crime, often considered to be among of the worst in the country. The downtown area in particular and much of the town north of Highway 82 (this highway often seen as a sort of "dividing line" by many) is continuously ridden with theft, assault, and much more, sometimes even in daylight and in popular areas such as near the library or churches. If one must go into more dangerous parts of Greenville, it is still better to do so in the day, and to be accompanied with other people; it is less dangerous for a female to go along with males. The most that can be done to protect oneself is to use the most common sense as possible, such as always locking one's car and never leaving valuable items inside, staying away from dark and deserted areas and not taking dangerous routes when it isn't necessary, and not drawing too much attention to oneself (i.e., wearing expensive jewelry or females wearing too revealing of clothes). While police have made some attempts to monitor and patrol downtown Greenville more, many residents complain that the town's police force is still highly ineffective. Much of south Greenville - for example, along Highway 1 South near the Nelco Movie Theater and Country Club, South Main Street near the Bowmanor Subdivision and Bayou Road, and the area surrounding Cypress Road - is considered to be generally safe and inhabited by middle- to upper-class families, although some crime occasionally drifts into these areas as well.

It should also be noted that Greenville is a town of ever-present and prominent racial discord, despite moderate progress since the 1950's. Many older, more upper-class whites (a small yet powerful minority) in particular still harbor views of varying degrees of racism, although this phenomenon is significantly less common in most middle-aged or younger whites (yet still very pronounced in others). Socializing and mixing with blacks too much could possibly be discouraged by some middle-aged white parents today, though it would have been a lot more common a few decades ago. Conversely, some blacks (whose race accounts for about 70% of the town's population) hold to what is commonly referred to as "reverse racism;" for example, it is often hard for a white teenager to find a job in local fast food or retail establishments where the management and all the employees are black. A visiting black man could possibly be looked down on by a white man, and vice versa. Both races often tend to form their own areas in the town, with a few middle-class areas being more or less mixed.

ReplyDeleteAs a long time resident of G'ville, I know how G'ville was and how it is today. In 1969 G'ville was named QUEEN CITY of the delta and industry was booming. In 1969 there were 87 industries in G'ville. Now today there are only 5 or 6. G'ville had two malls at one time and the population was around 60,000 people in the city limits. Now G'ville is mostly black and number one in poverty nationwide. I'll tell you why it has become this way. PRIVATE SCHOOLS brought all this on.There was no way the majority of the whites could afford to send their kids to private school making just above minimum wage. Therefore soon they had to move to places so their kids to go to public schools. This caused the working tax base on this town to dwindle to nearly nothing. When a town loses half of its population and most of its tax base then the town is doomed. Now with just only 30,000 people and half of those don't own a house or property then that makes the tax base even worse. So you wonder why our roads have gone to hell along with this town, not a CITY ANYMORE,. wHEN MAYBE 15,000 ARE TAKING CARE OF 30,000 THE MATH JUST DOESN'T WORK.......

We catch them everyday working as teams at the checkout counter. Or it happens while unloading the trucks on the back dock. Merchandise dissapears before it even hits the floor inside the store.
