"The Help" Filming in Greenwood

Going back...

Based on the beloved New York Times bestselling novel, "The Help," is the story of three extraordinary women in the deep South in 1962. Twenty-two-year-old Skeeter has just returned home after graduating from Ole Miss. She may have a degree, but her mother will not be happy until Skeeter has a ring on her finger. Skeeter would normally find solace with her beloved maid, Constantine, the woman who raised her, but she has disappeared, and no one will tell Skeeter where she has gone.

Aibileen is a black maid, a wise, regal woman raising her seventeenth white child. Something has shifted inside her after the loss of her own son. She is devoted to the little girl she looks after, though she knows both hearts may be broken. Minny, Aibileen's best friend, is short, fat, and perhaps the sassiest woman in Mississippi. She can cook like nobody's business, but she can't mind her tongue, so she's lost yet another job.

Minny finally finds a position working for someone too new to town to know her reputation. But her new boss has secrets of her own. Seemingly as different from one another as can be, these women will nonetheless come together for a clandestine project that will put them all at risk. And why? Because they are suffocating within the lines that define their town and their times. And sometimes lines are made to be crossed.

If you haven't read this book, you should. There is something in it for everyone, regardless of where you were in the 1960's.

This is a major motion picture being filmed in the Delta... and we should be proud! It not only recognizes the literary achievement of Mississippians, but gives us a true snapshot of what life was like in the segregated south.

I was in Greenwood last week and met several of the cast and crew. All were quite delightful and complementary of the Delta. Aside from the 100 degree plus temperatures they were enduring in costume and make-up, they found Greenwood very "charming".

Filming will go on throughout October and the movie will be released in early 2011. This is a very positive happening for the Delta. Some good news at last!

most of the films based in the southern states depict the south as a racist and ignorant place. will this film be any different

Hey, give Forthright a break. There ain't much going on in Greenville so what have you contributed. If you got a topic to discuss write about it and maybe it will make the front page. Who cares if he is black or white? This is the only place you can have you opinion written. A blog is only as good as the people on it.

Do they offer a CLASS in "defensive
    home invasion" suggestions?

Defensive home invasion IS essntially defending your
home against invaders in good form that utilizes
tried home invasions strategies to enable home owners
to address identifiable hazards in a predictable manner.

These strategies also should lead all right beyond instruction on underlying laws and procedures.

    Self defense?

why is Dr. Prior leaving Greenville/drmc?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Anonymous9:38 AM

    Don't know Dr. Prior.

    What did he/she specialize in?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Anonymous9:58 AM

Hey, did you hear about the MVSU
students that are sueing THE Valley
because their major...recording industry (music)...was "cut" from the program?

According to SAC (Southern Association of Colleges)...the major was approved, but THE Valley
never did provide the appropriate documentation!

90% of the enrolled students receive financial aide.

One particular "former" student is sueing for $10,000
for supposedly "lost wages","lost" money for travel, tuition, and also, "lost" money for a place to live while enrolled.

Wow! I didn't now that a person could sue for the "free" money that he received! LOL!

Read the article in the Clarion Ledger!

Dr. Prior is a Radiologist and a damned good one (came from KDH). He is probably leaving Greenville for the same reasons everyone else is. It is a hopeless wasteland of welfare and crime.

He can get a job anywhere. It is amazing that they kept him this long.

Word is they can't give Ray's job away. "Captain of the Titanic". UMC passed on its offer to take it over, so I guess Maize will rule forever (or until it folds) which should be about the time they finish the by-pass around Greenville.

If your house is not on the market, you are just fooling yourself. It is only going to get worse!

If it is true about Dr. Prior leaving, it is a great loss to our medical facility and community!

Just heard on the evening news that our property taxes are going up another 5%. They just raised them 5% in 2008. That's 10% in two years! How much has the value of your property decreased in the past five years?

The city boasts about not having to cut any city jobs and adding $600K to their budget! Now you know where it will come from... US...Greenville residents.

They have already cut services such as garbage pick-up and now we are paying another 5% for the luxury of living in the welfare capital of the state.

"Why" you ask. Simple... as the taxpayers flee Greenville in droves, someone has to maintain all of the city services to the 90% welfare community that remains.

In ten years, there won't be any taxpayers left in Greeville. So, if you are the last taxpayer to leave Greenville, please cut the lights off. Unless the begin taxing Meth labs and crack houses, there will be no one left to pay their bills!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Anonymous7:19 PM

The Meth labs and crack houses don't pay property taxes, and they sure as hell don't pay anything to IRS.

    They have nothing to lose.

If they get caught...they still get to live rent free with three meals a day...in Parchman!

    What's wrong with this picture??

I agree about Dr. Prior. He is a fabulous radiologist. He was the last physician recruited by BMC at KDH. You think she would help DRMC find some more physicians of his caliber?

    ReplyDelete

Because someone NEEDS to dig thru
    DRMC's sh!t.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Anonymous6:57 AM

DRMC is so much better off since Ray left. The administration people left now, sans Mr Wells, really care about patients and families, and employees sometimes. Give us a chance, and watch how we grow and improve without being stifled and smothered by Ray Ray!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Anonymous12:43 PM

i guess bmc is Beth McWright.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Anonymous7:31 PM

The old "delta docs" would not let BMC come in here. She wouldn't take their crap at KDH and they would never let her in here to clean up. She might just clean them out. Along with some other excess around here that do nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Anonymous7:40 PM

    Did you mean Beth McKnight?

The whole time that she was at KDH
    (years!)...she play "footsie" and
"other" things with the hospital administrator, Don Fisher.

Both were married to "other" people.

And if BETH did NOT like an employee...THE employee got fired!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Anonymous10:20 PM

oops. sounds like Anonymous 7:40pm may have been part of the 'excess' at KD.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Anonymous2:10 AM

No, I personally have NEVER worked at either KD or DRMC.

But, I still knew several employees that Beth got "rid" of!

Ask around town, and you'll find out who they were!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Anonymous9:39 AM

Not sure what 2:10 a.m. has against this lady since she did not ever work at either hospital. Sounds like a personal vendeta against her for some reason. I think the other person was just saying she could help the hospital. Isn't that what we all want, someone who can help fix all the concerns of DRMC? Whatever your personal thing is, get over it! We need help if we are going to save the only hospital we have left.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Anonymous5:21 PM

    9:39 AM

Maybe, just maybe...YOU are someone that SHE played "footsie" with!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Anonymous9:59 PM

Sorry to disappoint you but I am female! And I have not ever worked for BMC at KD or DMC.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Anonymous11:09 PM

I agree that the person who talks the footsie talk has a personal issue with BMC. For us who worked at KDH, we were grateful she was there. She kept the staff involved and she did care about us. She did get rid of the folks who did not do there jobs so that may be the person's friends but for us having to work with those people we were glad that they were no longer there. AND she protected us from the doctors whose wrath could be very hard at times.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Anonymous10:47 AM

We have heard about the comments about Ms. Mac -- so not true. I don't care what that person says, they have something personal against her and she was probably let go. Anom 11:09 is right - we were glad to see those go that got paid the same as us and didn't do their part in taking care of the patients. Wish we had someone like her here at DRMC.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Anonymous3:48 PM

The person who does not like Mrs. McKnight should remember that when she was here, we still had KD. And how she fought to try to save it. We all did not realize how good it really was until we had to go work at another hospital. The grass is not always greener.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Anonymous8:48 PM

We agree.. Several of us are reading this and are surprised at the venom of the person that talks about her. Many of us were "purchased" in the buy out and were treated terrible by everyone at DMC. Most of us left to go to other hospitals. For those left behind, they were demoted, salaries cut, and treated like second class citizens. Don't we all wish we were back in those days at KD??? Those were the days.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Anonymous8:07 AM

We had a family member in DRMC several months ago. They need someone to ramrod that place. We won't be back for anyone in our family again. We were a KD family, many of us were born there, and never lacked of good care. I also wish KD was back.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Anonymous12:19 PM

I saw if BMC is that good at ramroding why don't we send her to City Hall to clean up that mess??

  45. A man basket is perfect when a person needs to be lifted off of the ground in order to perform some type of maintenance or repair. The good news is that Canadian workplace accidents are on the decrease and have been for the past decade. Different companies have different stocks available and some may be carrying ex stock at cheaper prices than newly imported models. Searching for official dealers for your chosen forklift brand, will help to ensure this. It may be tempting for many people to try to use a forklift without being properly trained, but incorrect or unsafe use of a forklift can result in injury, death, or the destruction of machinery.
